1Co 9:24-26 "Don't you realize that everyone who runs in a race runs to win, but only one runner gets the prize? Run like them, so that you can win. Everyone who enters an athletic contest goes into strict training. They do it to win a temporary crown, but we do it to win one that will be permanent. So I run-but not without a clear goal ahead of me. So I box-but not as if I were just shadow boxing..." (The Holy Bible)
Now just relax, I'm not going to start preaching to you (I'll save that for another time Hahaha). Whether you consider yourself Christian or not, the quote above contains a lot of truth for athletes in any sport.
Do you still have a clear goal in your mind when you train? Every time you step into the gym or do your skills training, you need to have your thoughts focused on why you are doing it. If you've been training in your sport for any length of time, you know how easy it can be to just go through the motions. Telling yourself the lie that on game day you'll put in for real.
Are you slacking when you train? I'm not saying that you're being super lazy. BUT maybe you're putting in 90 percent when you know you should be training at 110 percent. Legendary basketball player, Michael Jordan had this to say "I've always believed that if you put in the work, the results will come. I don't do things half-heartedly. Because I know if I do, then I can expect half-hearted results." Somehow I think Michael knew what he was talking about.
"How you train in practice will be how you play on the day," has been a long standing statement for coaches to tell their athletes who are slacking during training. I don't remember where the quote originally came from (please email me if you do, so I can give due credit), but anonymous or not it still rings true! Sure there are those who still manage to put in a good performance on game day after slacking during training. The thing to consider is, how much better would they have done if they trained at the same level they play at?
When you are getting ready for your next training session (gym or skills work), check the focus of your mind. Make sure you bring your A game when you train.
In strength,
John
