To say that actor Will Smith has had a successful career is an understatement to say the least. Will has made a string of box office hit movies, been a chart topping rapper and also starred in his own TV sitcom. He has been nominated for and won various awards. Not to mention raking in a stack of money in the process.
So what does this have to do with strength and conditioning training? Well let me quote Will as to why he is such a success, and I think you'll see it straight away:
"I've never really viewed myself as particularly talented. I've viewed myself as slightly above average in talent. And where I excel is ridiculous, sickening, work ethic. You know, while the other guy's sleeping? I'm working. While the other guy's eatin’? I'm working... "
"...ridiculous, sickening, work ethic..." There is enough in those few words to make you the BEST ____________ (you insert what ever sport or fitness goals you have) you can possibly be! If you apply them.
You may or may not have what it takes to be a world champion. But if you apply Will Smiths' work ethic
to your training you will go a long way in that direction. Will is also quoted as saying, "The only thing that I see that is distinctly different about me is: I’m not afraid to die on a treadmill. You might have more talent than me; you might be smarter than me. But if we get on a treadmill together, there’s two things: you’re getting off first, or I’m gonna die.
It’s really that simple."
Too many athletes are lazy, and not willing to put in the effort required to become a real champion! The same goes for people who are training to get their bodies in shape. Everyone would like to have results, but only those who are willing to put in the work will get them. Contrary to the lies on TV infomercials, it does take a lot of work and effort, and it is NOT easy! If it was, then everybody would already have IT!!!
• What can you do extra that others are not doing?
• Are you putting in the time you should?
• Are you working your technique/ skills enough?
• Are you studying videos for weaknesses in your opponents?
• Have you done your research and got yourself a quality Strength & Conditioning coach yet? (Yes that was a shameless plug!).
If you are truly serious, and you really want victory. There are a bucket load of things you can be doing to get an edge and get ahead of your competition!
So get to it! What ever you want to achieve in your life IS in reach. As my man Zach Even Esh Says, "It's all about the hustle!"
Eager to see you succeed,
JWL
